Press Release Summary: Dr. Garg demanded that the Central Government and Delhi
Government should immediately take steps to increase the number of seats
particularly in medical and technical courses where barely 15% applicants get
admission.

Press Release Body: Dr. Nand Kishore Garg, Chairman, Maharaja Agrasen Technical
Education Society in a press Conference held in Delhi highlighted the problems of
admission in professional Institutions. According to Dr. Garg, the population of
Delhi is now more than 1.5 crores and about 2 lacs students have appeared in 12th
CBSE and ISCE examination in 2008. The total number of seats available in Delhi
including Delhi University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Jamia Millia
Islamia etc. are 60448. This means that more than one lac students will not be able
to get admission in regular courses. This problem is aggravating every year.
Last year Chief Minister, Delhi announced the opening of Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R.
Ambedkar Vishavidyala IIIT- Deemed University and National Law School in Delhi.
Students were expecting admission in these Universities from the Academic session
2008-09. But no provision yet has been made to start these Universities.
In the last 9 years Government has not opened a single college. Even the old
colleges numbering about 30 are not utilized optimally. Last year it was suggested
that evening classes would be started in all the Institutions under Delhi University
& Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University for Arts, Commerce and BBA courses, but
nothing has been done so far.
As per knowledge Commission headed by Dr. Sam Pitroda at least 23 more Universities
are needed in Delhi to cater to increasing demand of Admissions. Delhi being
capital, deserving students from other states are also attracted to Delhi. There are
about 50,000 students who are getting admission under DU and GGSIPU but no hostel
facility has been added in the last 10 years in spite of various announcements.
Dr. Garg demanded that the Central Government and Delhi Government should
immediately take steps to increase the number of seats particularly in medical and
technical courses where barely 15% applicants get admission. More than 50 thousand
students have to go to NCR towns like Faridabad., Ghaziabad, Noida, Sonepat etc to
get admission. Delhi Government should take steps to allot land for opening of new
Institutions and Hostels for which ample provision has been made in Master Plan
2021. Central Government should ensure liberal change of land use from Agriculture
to Institution to ensure adequate availability of land for educational purposes.
Allotment of land by DDA through auction for school and colleges should be stopped
as it is making cost of establishing educational institution exorbitant.
